Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Apply the outside exponent to every factor in the product. Simplify coefficients and multiply nested exponents.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Choose one challenge at a time

Start with a focused choice of operations or expression types. Combine them when the learner can explain the rule being used, as well as calculate the result.

Read the domain printed on variable problems. A simplified expression must keep any values excluded by the original denominator or radical.

The preview and downloaded PDF use the same resolved questions. Answers follow on separate pages; choose the student-only edition when handing out the exercise.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Distribute an outer power across multiplicative factors and multiply exponents in nested powers.

Worked example

Simplify (2x³y)².

4x⁶y².

Square the coefficient 2, multiply the exponent 3 by 2, and square y. Every factor inside the parentheses receives the outer power.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Draw one arrow from the outer exponent to each factor.
  • Include the coefficient when counting factors.
  • Write an implicit exponent of one if it helps.
  • Use repeated multiplication to check a two-factor example.
