Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Identify the operation first. Add exponents for a product and subtract them for a quotient, then express the answer with positive exponents.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Choose one challenge at a time

Start with a focused choice of operations or expression types. Combine them when the learner can explain the rule being used, as well as calculate the result.

Read the domain printed on variable problems. A simplified expression must keep any values excluded by the original denominator or radical.

The preview and downloaded PDF use the same resolved questions. Answers follow on separate pages; choose the student-only edition when handing out the exercise.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Choose between adding and subtracting exponents by reading the operation in each expression.

Worked example

How do x² × x⁵ and x²/x⁵ differ?

The product is x⁷; the quotient is 1/x³ for x ≠ 0.

The same two exponents lead to different rules because the operation changes. Multiplication gives 2 + 5; division gives 2 − 5.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Alternate a product and a quotient with the same bases.
  • Have learners say the chosen rule before calculating.
  • Use one operation alone if errors are still systematic.
  • Check that a final negative exponent is rewritten as a reciprocal.
