Keep the question and answer together

Ready-made PDFs are in English and include Letter and A4 versions. The file with answers adds a separate key with the same question positions. The preview shows the first page; downloads include every page.

Use the generator to change the number range, estimation format, question count or worksheet language. A long teacher note or translated instructions may add a page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Choose the operation described by a context and use rounded quantities to answer an explicitly approximate question.

Worked example

A library receives 246 books in one delivery and 318 in another. About how many books arrive altogether? Round each quantity to the nearest ten.

250 + 320 = 570, so about 570 books.

The question asks for an estimate. The exact total is 564 books, but the required method is to round the two deliveries separately before adding. Keep the unit books in the answer.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Ask students to identify the unit and the operation before doing any rounding.
  • Five questions make a short discussion sheet. Ten provide a standard practice set; fifteen offer an extended review with room for working.
  • Mixed stories include both addition and subtraction. Have students explain whether they are combining quantities or finding a difference.
  • The answer key shows the rounded calculation and a contextual estimated answer. Use it to discuss the method as well as the final number.
  • Grade links describe readiness, not a claim that every country teaches the skill in the same school year. Choose the number range learners can already read.
