Start with a ready-made worksheet

Round each factor to the requested place, then multiply the rounded factors. Both factors use the same rounding place, including a three-digit factor paired with a two-digit factor.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Keep the question and answer together

Ready-made PDFs are in English and include Letter and A4 versions. The file with answers adds a separate key with the same question positions. The preview shows the first page; downloads include every page.

Use the generator to change the number range, estimation format, question count or worksheet language. A long teacher note or translated instructions may add a page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use nearby multiples of ten or one hundred to estimate a product and interpret the difference from the exact result.

Worked example

Estimate 237 × 42 by rounding both factors to the nearest ten.

240 × 40 = 9600.

The exact product is 9954, so this estimate is 354 lower. Use 24 × 4 = 96, then account for the two factors of ten. Rounding only 42 would produce a different estimate.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use two-by-two-digit factors and nearest-ten rounding before introducing a three-digit factor.
  • The mixed-width profile always puts a three-digit factor first and a two-digit factor second. Both round to tens.
  • Nearest-hundred practice uses two three-digit factors. Students still need to track place value when multiplying the rounded values.
  • Discuss why an estimate may be above or below the actual answer. Rounding one factor upward does not by itself determine the direction of the product error.
  • An optional first worked example occupies one position and earns no marks. Turn it off to score every position.
