Start with a ready-made worksheet

Calculate each side separately. Compare the two results and write <, > or =. The selected number limit applies to the displayed operands; an addition result may be larger than that limit.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Mixed addition and subtraction

Twenty expression comparisons include five each of addition/addition, subtraction/subtraction, addition/subtraction and subtraction/addition. Every subtraction has a nonnegative result.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Treat each side as a complete value and separate calculation accuracy from the choice of comparison sign.

Worked example

Which sign belongs in 18 + 9 __ 20 + 7?

18 + 9 = 20 + 7.

Both sides total 27. Each displayed operand is at most 25, but a sum can exceed 25. Moving 2 from one addend to the other also explains why the totals are equal.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use the default addition setting with operands up to 25 before mixing operations. The opposite-operators setting puts addition on one side and subtraction on the other; mixed addition and subtraction also includes same-operator pairs.
  • Write the two calculated values below the expressions when a learner confuses calculation errors with comparison errors.
  • The all-four-operations option includes multiplication and division as advanced extensions. Choose it only when those operations are familiar; the Grade 2 connection concerns the foundational addition/subtraction practice.
