Practice with exact answers

Keep fractions, radicals and pi exact. Round only when a question asks for a decimal answer, and check every original domain restriction.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Evaluate a function at two endpoints and form the exact secant quotient.

Worked example

Find the average rate of change of f(x) = x² + 1 on [1, 3].

(f(3) − f(1)) ÷ (3 − 1) = (10 − 2) ÷ 2 = 4.

Evaluate both endpoints first: f(1) = 2 and f(3) = 10. The output increases by 8 while the input increases by 2, so the secant slope is 4. This is the average over the interval, not the derivative at an endpoint.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Keep exact values through the final step.
  • Retain every original domain restriction.
  • Treat trigonometric inputs as radians.
  • Use the given seed to reproduce a worksheet.
