Choose the operation in a balanced set of five addition and five subtraction stories. Use one-, two- or three-digit quantities and optional practice without regrouping.
Ask learners to identify what is known and what the question asks. A drawing, timeline or equation can make the relationship visible before they calculate. Check the answer against the original story and keep its unit.
The ready-made English downloads include practice alone or a separate answer key. The generator keeps the same questions in the preview and PDF, and a saved link reproduces the selected set.
Learning objective
What this activity builds
Choose addition or subtraction from the relationship rather than the worksheet title.
Worked example
A library has 135 books on a display and adds 42 more. How many are on display now? On a different display, 26 of 80 books are borrowed. How many remain?
135 + 42 = 177 books; 80 − 26 = 54 books.
The first collection grows, so add. The second loses books, so subtract. Each question requires its own choice of operation.
Teaching notes
Make the practice count
Ask learners to explain their operation before calculating.
Use no-regroup practice when reading the story is the main challenge.
Keep a quick estimate to judge whether the answer is sensible.
Make it yours
Customize the practice
Choose your options, update the preview, then download the exact same pages.
Work through ten stories with several changes or an unknown total. Choose whole-number practice or a set including decimals and money, with space to show intermediate steps.
Choose addition/subtraction, addition/multiplication, multiplication/division or all four operations. Set the digit range, number wording and extra information for ten stories.
