Start with a ready-made worksheet

Count each kind of shape. Write the first-to-second ratio, then simplify it. If the second question is included, compare the second group with the total of both groups.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Connect counted quantities to ordered ratios and distinguish a part-to-part comparison from a part-to-whole comparison.

Worked example

An array contains 6 circles and 9 stars. Write circles to stars, then stars to all shapes.

6:9 = 2:3; 9:15 = 3:5.

There are 15 shapes altogether. Divide both terms of 6:9 by 3 to get 2:3, and both terms of 9:15 by 3 to get 3:5. The second comparison has a different denominator because it refers to the whole.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use rows and columns to organize counting before reducing the ratio.
  • Say the two quantities aloud in the requested order before writing numbers.
  • Begin with the part-to-part question alone, then add the optional part-to-whole question.
  • Ask learners to explain why the counted ratio and simplest ratio describe the same relationship.
