Start with a ready-made worksheet

Complete the missing cells. Read the precision setting before writing decimal and percent values. An overbar marks a repeating digit; approximation labels identify rounded or truncated values.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Recognize equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages, and distinguish an exact value from an approximation.

Worked example

Write 1/8 as a decimal and a percent.

0.125 and 12 1/2% (12.5%).

Divide 1 by 8 to obtain 0.125, then multiply that value by 100 to express it as a percentage. If whole-percent rounding is requested, 13% is an approximation; the exact value is still 12.5%.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Start with the complete chart and omit thirds and eighths. Discuss 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 before adding less familiar entries.
  • Choose one missing cell per row for recognition, then two when students can convert independently.
  • Thirds repeat forever in decimal notation. The bar over the 3 in 0.333… represents every repeated 3.
  • Truncation cuts off digits; rounding uses the next digit. Two-thirds becomes 66% when truncated to a whole percent and 67% when rounded.
  • When a row contains an approximation, the exact fraction is supplied so the intended value is unambiguous.
  • For a classroom reference, choose no missing cells and turn off the answer page to avoid a duplicate completed chart.
