Complete the pattern
Extend shape, color or combined patterns with three- or four-item units. Choose distinct items or repeated shapes and colors, then draw the next item or finish the unit.

Try patterns with repeated shapes and colors
A repeating unit can reuse an item. These ten-row worksheets ask learners to fill every remaining space in the last unit. In combined patterns, the same shape can have different colors, and the same color can belong to different shapes. Small textures preserve the clues in grayscale.

What this activity builds
Identify a repeating unit and extend the pattern by one or more items.
Worked example
What comes next: circle, circle, square, circle, __?
circle
The three-item unit is circle–circle–square. The second unit has started, so another circle comes before the next square.
Teaching notes
Make the practice count
- Have learners bracket or say the repeating unit before predicting.
- Repeated shapes and colors add a second step: compare both the shape and its color. The small dots, stripes, grids and rings also distinguish the colors when printing in grayscale.
