Choose the expression, then explain the order

Choose easy or hard practice, then select the grouping and exponent form. Advanced and algebraic worksheets also let you choose positive, negative or mixed inputs. These settings describe the operands; a positive-input expression can still have a negative answer.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Apply precedence and grouping while keeping the arithmetic focused on addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Worked example

Evaluate 7 + 3 × 4 − 2.

7 + 12 − 2 = 19 − 2 = 17.

Multiplication comes before addition and subtraction. Once the product is found, calculate the remaining addition and subtraction from left to right.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with base operations before introducing grouping.
  • Use the same expression with added parentheses to discuss a changed result.
  • Let students identify the next operation without solving the entire question.
  • Include exponents only after repeated multiplication is understood.
