Start with a ready-made worksheet

Draw the first hop from 0 to the first number, then make the second hop to find the sum. In reading mode, write the equation shown by the hops.

Before you customize

Draw mode gives two operands and asks for the result and hops. Read mode gives the two directed hops and leaves all three equation terms blank. Positive ranges keep results on the nonnegative axis; signed practice is a separate option. Hop labels 1 and 2 show their order, including an explicit 0 for a move that stays in place.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Represent addition as a starting displacement followed by a second directed move.

Worked example

How do two hops show 3 + 4?

0 → 3 → 7, so 3 + 4 = 7.

Hop 1 locates 3. Hop 2 moves four units right from 3 and lands on 7. The sum is the final position, not the length of the first hop.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Start with the default 0–10 axis. Larger positive ranges offer either operands below 10 or the wider operand range indicated in the selector.
  • Draw mode gives both operands and leaves the sum blank. Read mode gives two numbered hops and leaves all three equation terms blank.
  • In signed practice, adding a negative number moves left. A zero move is labeled 0. Hop numbers 1 and 2 distinguish the order as well as the colors.
  • Each worksheet contains five different ordered operand pairs. Changing the seed chooses another reproducible set; some pairs can occur again on a later sheet.
