Learning objective

What this activity builds

Measure a physical segment accurately and state the same metric length in the requested unit.

Worked example

A line is 8.5 cm long. What is its length in millimeters?

85 mm

Each centimeter has 10 millimeters, so 8.5 × 10 = 85. The line geometry is unchanged when the answer unit changes.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with whole centimeters before mixing in half centimeters and individual millimeters.
  • Show the ruler when learners need help aligning zero with the segment start.
  • Use the 5 cm calibration line to confirm actual-size printing.
