Start with a ready-made worksheet

Identify the series and category named in the question before reading the height. For a combined total, include exactly the series and categories requested.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Read the scale before starting

Read the axis or symbol key before answering. Hard drawing tasks state a conversion between table and axis units. A stack of X marks or pictures is a quantity only after applying its printed key.

The static image shows the first student page. Each download includes every student page; the answer version adds the complete separate key. Some activities use multiple pages to keep charts, labels and response spaces readable.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use series labels and a shared scale to make valid comparisons and calculations.

Worked example

At one category, series A is 14 and B is 9. What is their combined total?

23.

Read both series at the same category, then add 14 + 9. Using B from another category would answer a different question.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Easy practice includes values from both series, direction, comparison and minima for both.
  • Hard practice includes combined totals, absolute differences, category sets and a subtotal across two categories and both series.
  • When asked where A exceeds B, inspect every category and include every valid answer. A tie is not an exceedance.
