Add decimals exactly by aligning equal place values and preserving the intended decimal scale.
Worked example
16.758
12.750 3.608 + 0.400 ─────── 16.758
With three digits right of the decimal selected, every addend uses thousandths, including trailing zeros. Align the decimal points: thousandths 0 + 8 + 0 = 8; hundredths 5 + 0 + 0 = 5; tenths 7 + 6 + 4 = 17, so write 7 tenths and carry 1 to the ones. The whole-number columns then total 16.
